Defining Celebrity
I started the coursework for Communication and Culture today by looking at the definitions of celebrity, the purpose of celebrity and what people think of it generally. It seems interesting that, although in a minority, other people do consider that celebrity is around for everyone else to have someone to laugh at. I’m going to go down the road of celebrity as role model to start off with, as part of the definition, but also add in other views and then go on to how other people, us regulars, go on to comment about celebrity with the aid of technology. This should create division and the bulk of the essay about the positive and negative aspects that leave the person commenting on celebrity looking into their own identity, how much power they have and the value people place on commentators and critics compared to ‘regular’ celebrities. The conclusion should how commentators and critics, through this process, create their own brand and essentially become celebrities themselves. This should include ideas about self obsession, self consciousness and images as well as having the themes of social theory and post-modernism running through as well as key concepts such as technology and media awareness.

[...] } and it’s on celebrity, social media and how we are all now in the ‘celebrity business‘ oh dear !!! [...]
There’s no denying modern culture’s celebrity obsession. Like it or not it’s here and only growing with social media reach. I like an idea I heard about celebrities fulfilling the role of being a magnified object of “town gossip,” a common knowledge connecting us. Since the local extended family has diminished and everyone in most towns doesn’t know everyone else’s business. I still don’t get the thrill of the “reality TV” celebrity.
That’s an interesting idea about celebrity and the “town gossip”, something I think can be used in the course. I’ve had many varied and differing views about what celebrity means, ranging from the idea that they are good for criticising through to them being highly held role models.
I also like the idea that you heard it somewhere.
