The Social Production of Space
Henri Lefebvre, the French Marxist and philosopher of urban space and everyday life, argued that “so long…. as the only connection between work spaces and living spaces is supplied by the agencies of political power and their control”
Lefebvre argued that:
1. Natural (physical) space is disappearing.
2. Every society produces a space, it’s own space.
3. Social space contains…
a) the social relations of reproduction, the bio-physiological spaces or ‘people’ space.
b) the relations of production, the division of labour and its organisation in the form of hierarchical social functions.. or the
‘working man club’ being different and in a distinctly different area to the ‘gentleman’s club’
The Three Kinds of Space
1. Spatial practise (living space)
2. Representation of space (conceived or ‘ordered’ space)
3. Representational spaces (perceived or ’sacred’ spaces)
