Gender Differences in NVC
We were asked to write down things for this and I have changed them somewhat from what was actually said. There was very little balance in this session about gender which was focused on how women are different from men. I’m not sure if this is part of the course or not but I have been expecting a more balanced approach. Although, when it comes to appearance women have traditionally had a greater selection especially with clothing. It is more acceptable for women to wear men’s clothes over men wearing women’s. Food for thought, intended or not.
Facial Expressions
Women generally have and use more facial expressions. more smiling, frowning etc.
Voices
Men have a louder voice and of a lower pitch, women smile more as they speak and this is said to up the pitch a little.
Spatial
Men tend to prefer distance whereas women are more comfortable close up. To this end men prefer to spread themselves out more, claiming more space for themselves.
Gaze
Women stare more than men do or take longer looks into others eyes.
Touch
Apparently this isn’t so much different, although man are less likely to respond positively to touch.
Appearance
Men spend less time on appearance, getting ready, as it were.
I was asked to write the following by Argyle although I don’t know the significance or if it was Argyle that made a study. I’ll search the name.
