Appearance
- Voluntary Control – Hair, clothes, make up and adornments. People can choose to change their hair colour, clothes, make up and other things such as earrings.
- Less Controllable – Weight, height, blushing and perspiration or ‘non verbal leakage’
I didn’t get that there might be an ‘uncontrollable’ or ‘non controllable’ but if there were it must be scarring or birth marks, perhaps freckles would come into this group?
Appearance sends messages about a number of things. It can send messages about personality, social status, whether a person is a conformer or not and identity. Appearance speaks to us about:
- Personality
- Social status
- Conformity
- Role
- Identity
Another part of the lesson was about what we ourselves have in our wardrobe (other than Narnia) and how it’s arranged, if it’s arranged and what it might say about ourselves. Unfortunately I didn’t write the questions down so I only have the answers. My clothing habits are, however, quite similar to other peoples, some of my clothes are ordered and neat and arranged into sections so I can easily pick out something to wear without rummaging around much. Although this wouldn’t be a large problem because of my small but limited collection of clothing. I am on a tight budget. I also have a few things chaotic, socks on the floor, although I have several laundry bins around the place there is clothing hanging over the side and almost on the floor waiting for me to pop it into the washing machine.
I also spoke about conformity and individuality in appearance. Saying that there are still ‘rules’ as such for people who want to rebel or not conform to the standard dress codes. An example is that the first rule of a non conformist is to not conform to any standard rules.
Someone else gave the example of not being able to be completely individual in appearance unless a person makes their own clothing or has something made bespoke to express individuality within the confines of conformity.
